Argentina Restores Bird Flu–Free Status After Closing Last Outbreaks

The move positions Argentina to restart poultry export talks pending recognition by key importers.

Overview

  • SENASA, which filed its autodeclaration Monday, notified the World Organisation for Animal Health that Argentina is free of highly pathogenic avian influenza after more than 28 days with no new commercial cases.
  • The last outbreaks were in Ranchos, Lobos, Bolívar, and Alejo Ledesma, where officials depopulated flocks, disposed of carcasses, and fully cleaned and disinfected farms under national protocols.
  • The new status allows Argentina to resume talks to restore trade in poultry and eggs, and actual market reopenings will depend on each buyer formally accepting the claim.
  • During the emergency, the country kept some sales going by using zoning and compartmentalization, tools that let exporters ship from unaffected areas while isolating disease zones.
  • SENASA launched a campaign to boost biosecurity and early reporting to guard against reintroduction, and industry leaders said the step helps protect jobs and foreign earnings.
