Argentina Lets Nine Provinces Tender Toll Concessions on National Routes

The move sets strict deadlines with federal oversight for any provincial toll concession.

Overview

  • Decree 253/2026, published Friday in the Boletín Oficial, authorizes Corrientes, Santa Fe, Córdoba, San Luis, Mendoza, Río Negro, Neuquén, San Juan and Santa Cruz to bid out toll-funded upkeep on selected national roads.
  • Provinces must first sign an operating agreement with National Highways (Dirección Nacional de Vialidad), secure approval from the Transport Secretariat, and launch a tender within one year or the delegation lapses.
  • Contracts can last up to 30 years, toll revenue must stay on the specific segment, and routes cannot be bundled with tracts in other jurisdictions, with National Highways set to supervise and audit.
  • Santa Fe’s governor Maximiliano Pullaro welcomed the step but urged caution, noting a finished bid to repair the A012 and asking for clarity on the concession term and ongoing maintenance.
  • Governors in Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro and Corrientes flagged target corridors such as RN40, RN143, RN22 and RN12, signaling where new toll booths could appear once agreements are signed.
