Argentina Formalizes Terrorist Listing of CJNG, Activating Sanctions

The step unlocks immediate financial controls to choke off the cartel's funding.

Overview

  • Argentina added the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación to its RePET registry, a terrorism list that triggers asset freezes, blocked transfers, and tighter monitoring of any linked accounts.
  • CJNG, which authorities described as a transnational criminal network with operations in more than 40 countries, was designated after official reports detailed cross-border crimes and alleged ties to other terror-listed groups.
  • The move, which the government announced Thursday, was coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, the Security Ministry, the Justice Ministry, and the State Intelligence Secretariat.
  • Officials said the listing aligns with countries that already classify the cartel as terrorist, including the United States, and paves the way for closer intelligence sharing and joint financial enforcement.
  • RePET lets Argentina impose controls without a criminal verdict when verified indicators show a threat, a tool the Milei administration has also used for Hamas, the Cártel de los Soles, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Iran’s Quds Force, and it follows the February 22 killing of CJNG leader “El Mencho” in Mexico.
