Argentina Expands Early Detection and Local Care for Congenital Heart Disease

Provincial investment in screening, technology and training is moving treatment closer to families.

Overview

  • Santa Fe completed 150 congenital heart surgeries in 2025, reducing referrals to Buenos Aires to a single case, with 76 open-heart operations and 74 hemodynamic interventions.
  • The Hospital de Niños Dr. Orlando Alassia added a Philips Azurion 5 angiograph in October 2025, enabling 20 procedures and broadening local pediatric hemodynamics capacity.
  • In Salta, the Hospital Público Materno Infantil performed over 5,000 neonatal screenings in 2025, identifying 146 cases and carrying out 110 procedures, including 55 corrective or palliative heart surgeries.
  • Congenital heart disease affects an estimated 10–12 per 1,000 live births in Argentina, or about 7,000 newborns each year.
  • Prenatal echocardiography and newborn pulse-oximetry are allowing planned deliveries at high-complexity centers and quicker interventions that improve outcomes.
