Overview
- Mohsen Soltani Tehrani, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Buenos Aires, left Argentina Saturday within the 48-hour deadline, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno said.
- Argentina declared him persona non grata on Thursday under Article 9 of the 1961 Vienna Convention and ordered him to depart within two days.
- Officials said the step followed Argentina’s move this week to label Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group and to add it to a national registry that freezes assets and blocks financial activity.
- The government also cited Iran’s long-standing failure to aid the AMIA investigation into the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires and the elevation of individuals wanted by Argentine courts to senior IRGC roles.
- Iran denounced the measures as illegal, Israel’s foreign minister and the U.S. ambassador praised them, and reporting says a formal break in relations is likely with consular gaps possible as Argentina has run its Iran mission from Baku since 2025.
