Argentina Authorizes U.S. Troop Entry for Joint Drills by Emergency Decree

Officials say the training aims to boost interoperability and access U.S. combat know‑how.

Overview

  • The government, which published the decree Friday, authorized two exercises with U.S. forces called Daga Atlántica from April 21 to June 12 and PASSEX from April 26 to 30.
  • Daga Atlántica will run land, air, sea and river drills at Base Naval Puerto Belgrano, the Córdoba garrison and the VII Air Brigade in Moreno to train alongside U.S. units with combat experience.
  • PASSEX will take place in Argentina’s Exclusive Economic Zone with the USS Nimitz and USS Gridley, and Argentine ships are slated to join, including ARA La Argentina and ARA Rosales, according to La Nación.
  • The decree uses an emergency order because a related bill stalled in Congress and it now goes to a bicameral committee for review, while critics cite the Constitution’s rule that Congress must approve foreign troop entry.
  • El Ancasti reports annexes list more than 895 million pesos for the drills and note about 50 U.S. special‑operations troops and transport aircraft such as C‑17 and C‑130, figures not widely confirmed by other outlets.
