Argentina Approves Two Mining Projects Under RIGI, Adding $1.14 Billion in Investment

The extended RIGI framework is being used to secure capital by offering long-term fiscal and legal certainty through 2027.

Overview

  • The RIGI committee cleared the Veladero gold mine expansion in San Juan for $380 million and AbraSilver’s Diablillos gold-silver project for $760 million.
  • Economy Minister Luis Caputo said the two projects are expected to create more than 2,300 direct and indirect jobs and generate about $750 million in annual exports.
  • With these approvals, RIGI now counts 12 projects with commitments exceeding $26 billion, according to the government.
  • Diablillos, located in the SaltaCatamarca cooperation zone, is moving through environmental impact review and is planned as a 14-year open-pit operation processing 9,000 tonnes per day.
  • Decree 105/2026 extended RIGI’s window to July 2027, while much larger copper proposals such as Vicuña (about $18 billion) and Glencore’s El Pachón and MARA (about $14 billion combined) remain under evaluation.
