Arevon Brings 300 MW / 1,200 MWh Nighthawk Battery Online in Poway

The facility will store power for up to four hours to strengthen San Diego-area grid reliability under a long-term contract with PG&E.

Overview

  • Arevon Energy announced on Aug. 12 that the 300 MW/1,200 MWh Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway is operational and now serving the San Diego region under a long-term agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
  • The system stores electricity during periods of low demand and can dispatch up to four hours of energy, which Arevon says is enough to power as many as 385,000 homes for that period.
  • Nighthawk uses lithium iron phosphate battery cells in Tesla Megapack systems, a chemistry Arevon highlights for its stronger thermal stability and longer cycle life compared with some other lithium chemistries.
  • Arevon says the project employed more than 130 workers at peak construction and is expected to generate over $30 million in property tax revenue across its lifetime while supporting local nonprofits and youth and first-responder programs.
  • CPUC officials framed Nighthawk as a result of integrated resource planning and mid-term reliability procurement, and Arevon positioned the site as its largest standalone storage asset while advancing other California projects including the 250 MW Cormorant under construction.
