Arequipa Sets Closures and Security Plan for Valentine’s and Carnival in Historic Center

Officials describe a heritage-first security plan built on barriers, access controls, patrols.

Overview

  • Metal barriers will go up in the Plaza de Armas early on Feb. 14, with the main quadrilateral and the Cathedral front closing from 14:00, and authorities will reassess restrictions on Feb. 15.
  • On Feb. 14 from 17:00 to 00:00, vehicle access will be cut at Zela/Jerusalén, Morán/San Juan de Dios, and Villalba/Ugarte, with a possible closure at La Marina/San Agustín, while San José stays open as an exit route.
  • City security will field 180 serenos supported by the video surveillance center, 15 motorized units, motorcycles, an ambulance, and a mobile police station, with patrols targeting street vending and public drinking.
  • The intersection of Av. Juan de la Torre with Peral will be closed on Feb. 14 from 06:00 to 18:00, with officials warning of heavier congestion and detours in the Cercado.
  • Heritage authorities confirmed full replacement of the vandalized “Leoncitos” heads in sillar using historical references, with the municipal Escuela Taller slated to begin carving after classes resume in April and work estimated to start in May.
