- INPE ordered a search at the Arequipa prison that found four cellphones hidden in a sock on inmate Luis Alberto Paredes Nina, plus chargers, USB cables, earbuds and a bag of small drug packets known locally as ketes.
- The sweep occurred in area 4 of pavilion 4 with 12 security agents, the deputy director and the duty warden participating.
- Officials opened an internal investigation, alerted the Public Ministry and the National Police, and imposed administrative and security measures because possession of phones and drugs is a serious breach.
- In a separate case at the Cochamarca prison in Pasco, prosecutors and police are investigating an alleged sexual assault of a 27-year-old inmate, with medical exams noting recent injuries and a psychological evaluation pending.
- At the same time, INPE is promoting its Cárceles Productivas work program in the Puno region, saying about 628 inmates are employed through new agreements with local businesses.
