Arena on Ewald in Herten Files for Insolvency

A court-appointed insolvency administrator will now decide on ticket refunds and whether the temporary venue can be rescued or must be liquidated.

Overview

  • The operators of the temporary 'Arena on Ewald' filed for insolvency on Thursday, July 9, and the Landgericht Bochum has named Maximilian van Kell as the insolvency administrator.
  • Organisers Dirk Lasarz and Frank Südfeld announced that all remaining scheduled events have been cancelled, including the Ronan Keating show, and public-viewing activities have stopped.
  • The organisers blame the early exit of Germany from the World Cup and weak ticket sales for the cash shortfall that forced the insolvency filing.
  • It is currently unclear whether ticket buyers will be reimbursed because the insolvency administrator must first assess the estate and decide on payouts, possible restructuring, or liquidation.
  • The Arena had been one of the largest World Cup public-viewing sites in North Rhine-Westphalia and its closure affects local staff, vendors and the summer events program while the operators seek a buyer or other rescue options.
