ARAI Opens Pune ADAS Test City as India Plans Phased Mandate From 2027

The 20-acre Pune site enables India-specific calibration of driver-assistance technology to meet upcoming commercial-vehicle requirements.

Overview

  • ARAI showcased the operational readiness of its Rs 40 crore ADAS Test City at Takwe near Talegaon, described as India’s first dedicated on-road validation ecosystem.
  • The facility recreates local traffic complexities such as four-to-two-lane merges, S-curves, non-perpendicular intersections, unmarked roads and controlled parking areas.
  • Director Reji Mathai said ADAS features for commercial vehicles will be mandated in phases starting in 2027, with draft standards already published.
  • The five systems proposed for implementation are autonomous emergency braking, driver drowsiness detection, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and moving object detection.
  • ARAI has gathered 30,000–40,000 km of nationwide sensor data and is developing India-specific targets, including for auto-rickshaws and three-wheelers, as suppliers localise technology for upcoming models.
