April’s Pink Moon Peaks Tonight at 10:12 p.m. EDT

The spring full moon sets the date of Easter for April 5.

Overview

  • The Pink Moon, which reaches peak illumination Wednesday at about 10:12–10:13 p.m. EDT, will look its most striking near moonrise low in the eastern sky.
  • The name comes from spring’s blooming moss phlox, so the moon will not turn pink and often looks orange near the horizon, and it is not a supermoon this month.
  • Stargazers can watch the moon pass very close to Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, on Thursday, April 2.
  • In Western Christian calendars, this full moon is the Paschal Moon that sets Easter on Sunday, April 5, and it also lines up with the lunar timing used for Passover.
  • NASA’s Artemis II crewed mission has a daily launch window from April 1–6, creating a chance the rocket could share the sky with the full moon for viewers in Florida and southern Georgia.
