Apple Slashes iPhone Air Production as Demand Lags, Shifts Output to iPhone 17 and Pro

Apple redirects capacity to better-selling iPhone 17 variants following weak demand for the Air.

Overview

  • Starting in November, iPhone Air production orders will drop to less than 10% of September volumes, a level described by Nikkei Asia’s sources as near end-of-production.
  • Suppliers are set to cut iPhone Air capacity by more than 80% through the first quarter of 2026, with some longer‑lead components ending by late 2025, according to analyst Ming‑Chi Kuo.
  • Apple has increased output for the base iPhone 17 by about 5 million units and added orders for the 17 Pro, while keeping the overall iPhone 17 lineup forecast at 85–90 million units.
  • A KeyBanc survey finds virtually no demand for iPhone Air and limited willingness to pay for a foldable, as Apple’s website shows the Air readily available while other iPhone 17 models face multi‑week delays.
  • The Air, which replaced the Plus and initially accounted for roughly 10–15% of planned iPhone 17 production, is seen by industry reports as a possible bridge to a first foldable iPhone projected for 2026 and a potential naming shift to “iPhone 20” in 2027.
