Apple Rolls Out Developer AirPods Beta Including First Build for AirPods Max 2

The developer-only 9A5304b firmware lets Apple test iOS 27 AirPods features such as custom EQ and GymKit before a public beta in July and a planned September release.

Overview

  • The developer beta began rolling out Tuesday and installs firmware version 9.0.304 (build 9A5304b) on AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods (4th gen) and, for the first time, AirPods Max 2.
  • Developers can opt in via the AirPods Beta Updates toggle in Bluetooth or AirPods settings and Apple says updates install automatically when earbuds are in their case and near a paired iPhone or Mac.
  • Apple has not published detailed release notes for 9A5304b and devices enrolled in the beta cannot be rolled back to earlier firmware while they remain on the beta track.
  • The build is meant to test iOS 27 features including custom EQ, a redesigned AirPods settings UI, Siri AI support, Precision Finding and GymKit syncing, with some features limited by hardware such as the H2 chip or Ultra Wideband.
  • Users should expect a developer-only test period now, a public AirPods beta in July, and a full iOS 27 and AirPods firmware release in September, and testers are advised to use secondary AirPods or devices because beta software can cause issues.
