Apple Rolls Out Ads in Apple Maps in U.S. and Canada

The company is selling single sponsored listings to boost services revenue while saying ad interactions and location data remain private on users’ devices.

Overview

  • Apple began rolling out Maps ads Tuesday and says placement will ramp to all iPhone and iPad users in the United States and Canada over the coming weeks.
  • Sponsored listings appear in two places: in the Suggested Places feed before a search and at the top of relevant search results, with only one ad shown per search and a small blue "Ad" badge to mark it.
  • Apple frames the system as privacy‑first, saying a user’s location and ad interactions are not linked to their Apple ID, that personal data stays on device, and that ad data is not shared with third parties.
  • There is no way to turn off Maps ads, even for paid Apple service subscribers, and early public reaction on social platforms has been largely negative with some users saying they will switch to alternatives.
  • Apple opened bookings for businesses in August and is offering a limited 15% credit for early advertisers while also banning categories such as bail bonds, cryptocurrency ATMs, and home services under stricter ad rules.
