Apple Releases watchOS 27 Beta 2 for Apple Watch Ultra 3

The device-specific seed emphasizes on-device Siri AI and stricter hardware rules that may shorten software support for older watches.

Overview

  • Apple seeded a developer-only beta of watchOS 27 specifically for the Apple Watch Ultra 3 on Thursday, making the Ultra 3 eligible for the second beta after it missed the earlier update.
  • watchOS 27 adds an on-device Siri AI that can hold multi-turn conversations and use personal data, but the feature requires an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence such as the iPhone 15 Pro or later.
  • The update narrows device compatibility to newer models — Series 9–11, Ultra 2–3, and SE 3 — leaving Series 8, 7, 6, SE 2 and Ultra 1 without official watchOS 27 support.
  • Developers can install the beta through the Watch app if the paired iPhone is on iOS 27 and the watch is on Wi‑Fi, on its charger, and above 50% battery, and Apple warns that betas can be unstable and that downgrading a watch is difficult.
  • Beyond new features like Dynamic app grid, Smart Stack suggestions, improved Find My and Workout Buddy, analysts say the hardware cutoff may shorten usable device life and push developers to drop older watchOS targets.
