Apple Pulls Viral Freecash App From App Store for Misleading Marketing

Apple cited violations of rules on deceptive marketing, including bait-and-switch tactics.

Overview

  • Apple, which removed Freecash on Monday, pointed to App Store Review Guidelines 3.1.2(a) and 2.3.1 that bar scamming users and misleading promotion.
  • Freecash rose on TikTok with videos claiming users could earn about $35 an hour, and TikTok later pulled some ads after Wired reported the claims were false.
  • Market data from Appfigures shows the app surged to the No. 2 spot on the U.S. App Store and logged roughly 5.5 million downloads in January 2026.
  • Malwarebytes reported the app’s privacy policy allowed collection of sensitive data such as health, race, religion, sexual orientation, sex life, and biometrics.
  • The app paid small rewards for installing and playing partner games while nudging players toward in‑app purchases and ads, and third‑party data indicates it reentered the store by rebranding an existing app as Freecash; Google said it is looking into the current Android listing.
