Apple Previews iOS 27 and a Rebuilt Siri AI

The company is pairing a privacy-focused mix of on-device models with Google’s Gemini cloud to handle heavier AI tasks while restricting some features by device and region.

Overview

  • Apple formally previewed iOS 27 and the new Siri AI during its WWDC keynote on Monday, releasing developer betas immediately and promising a public beta next month with a staged public rollout this fall.
  • Siri AI is a conversational assistant with on-screen awareness and a dedicated Siri app that stores and syncs conversation history through iCloud and can act across apps to draft, edit, search and take multi-step actions.
  • The next-generation Apple Intelligence will run smaller models on-device and route larger inference to cloud GPUs using Google’s Gemini technology and reported Google Cloud/Nvidia hardware to reduce latency and cost.
  • Advanced Apple Intelligence features will be limited by language, region and hardware—English will ship first, iOS/iPadOS Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU or China, and the most capable tools require newer iPhone, iPad and Mac models.
  • iOS 27 also emphasizes speed and usability gains with app launches up to 30% faster, photos appearing up to 70% faster, an adjustable Liquid Glass opacity slider, expanded parental controls, and the release follows a $250 million consumer settlement and cautious investor reaction.
