Overview
- Apple activated cross-border Apple Pay for Visa credit cards issued in mainland China, with Visa debit from CITIC supported at launch for in-store and online use abroad.
- Eight banks are live initially: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of Communications, China Merchants Bank, CITIC Bank, Ping An Bank, and Industrial Bank.
- Apple says participating issuers implemented the feature in coordination with China UnionPay.
- Support will expand to additional banks in the coming months, including Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, China Construction Bank, China Minsheng Bank, and China Everbright Bank, while Mastercard readies similar functionality for select issuers.
- Eligible cards can be added in Apple Wallet or via bank apps on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch with recent OS versions, with transactions secured by a Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element.
