Apple Overhauls Screen Time With New Cross‑Platform Parental Controls

The update centralizes app and website permission workflows, expands content warnings to flag gore and violent images, introduces a Time Allowances scheduling system, exposes developer APIs for third‑party apps.

Overview

  • Apple confirmed at WWDC 2026 a refreshed Screen Time that will run across iPhone, iPad and Mac as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
  • Parents will be able to create and manage child Apple Accounts more easily and set app access with whitelist and blacklist controls that let more apps be enabled over time.
  • The current request-for-access flow for apps is being extended to websites so children can ask to view a site and parents can preview and approve it before access is granted.
  • Apple is expanding on-device content warnings so children receive alerts for images that may contain blood, gore or violent content in messages, extending the existing nudity warnings.
  • A new Time Allowances system will let parents set category- and app-specific limits and custom daily schedules, and Apple will provide developer APIs with betas and a wider release planned later in 2026 to let third parties integrate with the controls.
