Apple Opens Preorders for M6 Mac mini and M5 Ultra Mac Studio as Retailers Slash Prices on M5 Macs

Retailers are using early discounts to drive preorders.

Overview

  • Apple began taking preorders for the new Mac mini with the M6 chip and the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra and set deliveries for Sept. 22.
  • Apple says the M6 Mac mini offers up to 40% faster CPU, up to 4× faster AI, and up to 2× faster graphics and storage versus the prior-generation Mac mini, though independent benchmarks are still needed to confirm real-world gains.
  • Major retailers and authorized resellers quickly listed launch-day SKUs and rolled out price cuts on existing M5 models, including up to $500 off select M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro configurations and steep discounts on some high-end M5 systems.
  • Amazon has applied the first pre-order cash discounts to two M6 Mac mini configurations, pricing the 16GB/256GB model at $879.99 and the 16GB/512GB model at $1,069.99, and has also trimmed the M5 Pro Mac mini by about $30.
  • Analysts and outlets report an unconfirmed M6 rollout timetable for additional Macs and iPads in fall 2026 and spring 2027, and the current retail moves may reflect sellers trying to clear stock and stimulate demand after Apple’s June price increases.
