Apple Launches Tap to Pay in Mexico, Turning iPhones Into Contactless Card Terminals

The rollout relies on partner apps via Visa’s SDK to cut hardware costs for small sellers.

Overview

  • Apple activated Tap to Pay on iPhone in Mexico on Tuesday, letting merchants accept contactless cards and digital wallets without extra hardware.
  • Clip and Adyen enabled the feature at launch, with Clip turning it on in its app for in-person payments the same day.
  • Visa introduced its Visa Acceptance Platform SDK in Mexico to help payment providers and developers add Tap to Pay support to their merchant apps.
  • The feature works on iPhone XS or newer with the latest iOS and supports Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards as well as Apple Pay and other wallets.
  • Transactions are encrypted in the iPhone’s Secure Element and Apple does not store card numbers or transaction details, though some cards may not work at first and fees or limits can still apply in Mexico’s cash-heavy market.
