Overview
- Apple announced Reference Image on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as an opt-in Reference mode that has the Main camera sign pixel-level sensor data and uses Private Cloud Compute to produce an unalterable reference image viewable beside the editable photo.
- The feature is limited at launch to iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models and will not allow capture in China or initial capture in the European Union although devices running iOS 27 can still develop and view reference images.
- Apple is opening APIs in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 so third-party apps and newsroom tools can display reference images, and the company plans to add support for Google’s SynthID standard in a later software update.
- Reference Image proves what the camera sensor recorded at capture and whether a file was later edited but it cannot prove a scene’s context or intent, requires shooting in Reference mode to generate a proof, and can be undermined when platforms strip or recompress metadata.
