Apple Expands Tap to Pay on iPhone to Hong Kong

Merchants can accept contactless payments using only a compatible iPhone through partner apps with transactions protected by the Secure Element.

Overview

  • Adyen, Global Payments, KPay, and SoéPay are the first platforms enabling the service in Hong Kong starting December 9.
  • Payments from Apple Pay, other digital wallets, and contactless credit and debit cards are supported across American Express, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa.
  • Transactions use NFC and are encrypted on the Secure Element, and Apple says it does not store card numbers or transaction information.
  • Merchants can use an iPhone 11 or later, with support for PIN entry and accessibility features built into the checkout flow.
  • The rollout targets sectors including taxi, retail, food and beverage, beauty, and professional services, following a Singapore launch and part of expansion to 50+ regions since 2022.
