Apple Ends Legacy HomeKit Support, Forcing Migration to New Home Architecture

The change compels users to move to Apple’s rebuilt platform requiring modern OS versions with a HomePod or Apple TV as the hub.

Overview

  • Effective today, February 10, Apple shut off the original HomeKit, with unupgraded homes at risk of losing access or seeing accessories and automations fail.
  • Users can migrate in the Home app by going to More > Home Settings > Software Update > Update Now, which updates all owned homes simultaneously.
  • The new architecture no longer allows iPads to serve as home hubs, so a HomePod or Apple TV is required for remote control and automations.
  • Devices must run at least iOS/iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2, and older hardware that cannot meet these versions may lose Home access.
  • Apple says some accounts may be upgraded automatically after the deadline, enabling Matter support and features such as guest access, Activity History, and robot vacuum integration.
