Apple Declares Three Intel MacBooks Obsolete

The move ends Apple‑authorized hardware repairs plus replacement parts for the affected 2017–2018 models and sends owners to independent repair shops.

Overview

  • Apple updated its support document to list the 2018 Retina MacBook Air, the 13‑inch 2018 MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and the 13‑inch 2017 MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports as obsolete.
  • Under Apple policy a product becomes obsolete seven years after it was last sold, which generally stops standard repairs and Apple production of replacement components for that model.
  • Mac laptops get one exception: Apple may provide battery‑only repairs for up to ten years after last sale when replacement parts are available.
  • Owners of the newly obsolete models will need third‑party repair shops for most fixes because Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers will no longer source parts.
  • The change highlights Apple’s long running shift from Intel to Apple Silicon and follows earlier removals of Intel Macs from full support, leaving affected machines limited to older macOS releases.
