Apple Adds Generative Reframing and Frame Expansion to iOS 27 Photos

Hybrid on-device plus Private Cloud Compute lets Apple run stronger AI without exposing user photos.

Overview

  • iOS 27’s developer beta now includes three new Apple Intelligence tools in Photos: Spatial Reframing to change camera perspective after capture, Extend to expand image borders by up to 25% one time, and an upgraded Clean Up for object removal.
  • Apple built Spatial Reframing on the iPhone’s spatial capture data so the app can shift angle and let AI fill missing pixels, and Extend limits edits to one 25% expansion per side to prevent runaway alterations.
  • Early hands-on testing finds Clean Up and Extend generally produce convincing fixes but reports show Spatial Reframing can invent or distort content near people and close subjects, creating uncanny or inaccurate results.
  • Edited images receive Synth ID metadata that marks them as AI-modified when exported, but that label’s visibility depends on the receiving platform and is not prominently surfaced by all apps.
  • The features require devices that support Apple Intelligence while other iOS 27 Photos improvements run on older hardware, and Apple says the hybrid compute model balances stronger cloud models with privacy protections as it refines the tools before public release.
