Anthropic Tests Pulling Claude Code From $20 Pro Plan as Usage Soars

Anthropic says it is testing changes on about 2% of new signups to study rising usage costs.

Overview

  • - Public pricing pages showed Tuesday that Claude Code was no longer included in the $20 Pro tier, replacing a prior checkmark with an X.
  • - Anthropic’s head of growth, Amol Avasare, said the change is a small test for about 2% of new prosumer signups and that existing Pro and Max users are not affected.
  • - Confusion grew as some pages and the CLI still showed Pro access, and Avasare later said Anthropic reverted the landing page and docs to reduce that confusion.
  • - Avasare said engagement per subscriber has surged and long-running agent tasks have changed usage patterns, so the company is experimenting with plan structures and will give advance notice before changes that affect current subscribers.
  • - Reporters tie the trial to capacity and token-cost pressure, noting recent usage caps and limits on third-party agents that may push new users toward the $100 Max tier or paid API use for coding workflows.
