Anthropic Secures All of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 to Lift Claude Capacity

The unusual lease shows rivals will trade infrastructure when demand outpaces planning.

Overview

  • Anthropic, which announced the deal Wednesday, will tap all capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus 1 in Memphis, adding over 300 megawatts from more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs within weeks.
  • Paid users saw immediate changes as Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s five‑hour limits, removed peak‑hour throttling for Pro and Max, and raised API rate limits for Opus models.
  • Elon Musk said he approved the arrangement after meeting Anthropic leaders and stated SpaceX can reclaim the compute if Claude is judged to harm humanity.
  • SpaceX moved its own AI training to the newer Colossus 2 system, freeing Colossus 1 to lease to Anthropic in a rare case of one top AI lab supplying another.
  • Financial terms were not disclosed, and analysts say the deal turns idle supercomputer capacity into revenue for SpaceX ahead of its expected IPO.
