Anthropic Moves Claude Fable 5 to Pay‑Per‑Token After Five‑Day Extension

The company says the shift will temper heavy demand and limited server capacity while it works to restore normal subscription access.

Overview

  • Anthropic extended included Fable 5 access for Pro, Max, Team and select Enterprise subscribers through July 12 and limited usage to 50 percent of weekly plan allowances during the grace period.
  • After the July 12 cutoff the model will be available only via prepaid usage credits priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
  • The move follows a rocky launch that triggered U.S. export curbs and a multi‑week blackout, and Anthropic deployed a stricter safety classifier that independent tests say can over‑flag requests and silently route them to the weaker Opus 4.8 model.
  • Heavy users and automated agent workflows face sharply higher bills with reports of rapid credit burn, so developers are adopting cost controls such as routing tasks to mid‑ or budget models, frequent session resets, prompt caching and batch APIs.
  • The change signals a wider industry shift toward model tiering that treats frontier models as scarce premium resources and Anthropic says it will return Fable 5 to subscriptions once it brings more capacity online.
