Anthropic Moves Claude Cowork to the Cloud and Adds Mobile and Web Beta

The update lets scheduled and background Cowork tasks run without a user’s device online and requires user approval before agents finalize outputs.

Overview

  • Anthropic began rolling out a cloud-hosted Claude Cowork beta to Max plan subscribers on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, with access set to expand to other paid tiers in the coming weeks.
  • Cloud Cowork can run scheduled and background workflows when a user’s devices are offline, but Claude will pause and ask for review before sending or finalizing any output.
  • The company unified Chat and Cowork on web and desktop so projects and generated artifacts are accessible in one workspace while the desktop app remains the fullest experience because it can access local files and the browser.
  • Existing scheduled tasks created before the cloud move continue to run locally and require the device to be on unless a user manually migrates them to the cloud, and Anthropic extended doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5 to encourage testing.
  • Anthropic’s usage sample of 1.2 million Cowork sessions shows the tool is mostly used for everyday knowledge work—33.4% business operations and 16.4% content creation versus 8.7% software development—illustrating a push to automate routine administrative work as competitors race to embed always-on agents into workplace tools.
