Anthropic Leases All of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 to Lift Claude Capacity

The lease gives Anthropic near-term access to over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs to ease a compute crunch that had throttled Claude users.

Overview

  • Anthropic signed an agreement Wednesday to use the full Colossus 1 supercomputer in Memphis, adding more than 300 megawatts and 220,000+ Nvidia GPUs, and it immediately doubled Claude Code limits and raised API caps for paid tiers.
  • The company expects to begin shifting inference workloads to Colossus 1 within days, with full access to the cluster coming online within about a month.
  • Elon Musk said he approved the lease after meeting Anthropic leaders and stated SpaceX reserves the right to reclaim compute if an AI system engages in actions that harm humanity.
  • CEO Dario Amodei said revenue and usage jumped about 80-fold in the first quarter, which strained GPU capacity and led to outages and strict limits that this deal is meant to relieve.
  • The SpaceX arrangement is part of a broader multi-vendor buildout with Amazon, Google/Broadcom, Microsoft/Nvidia, and Fluidstack, and both companies signaled interest in exploring orbital data centers as a longer-term option.
