Anthropic Launches Claude Duet, a Proactive AI Agent

The launch signals a move to always-on AI that could make background model work part of users' subscription costs.

Overview

  • Anthropic unveiled Claude Duet on Oct. 21, 2026 as a waitlisted research preview available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States.
  • Duet is built on the Opus 5.5 model and draws on a user’s existing Claude memories, skills and connected apps while running on a dedicated cloud virtual machine so it can keep working when the app is closed.
  • The agent monitors inboxes and calendars, delivers a daily brief of items needing attention, and can perform tasks from scheduling and invoicing to building dashboards and web apps with user review for larger jobs.
  • Claude Duet supports more than 6,000 connectors including Gmail, Slack, Stripe Link and Shop Pay, and Anthropic says background processing will count against a user’s existing plan usage limits which could raise costs for heavy users.
  • Anthropic is limiting the rollout to gather feedback and manage safety, positions Duet as a competitor to OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse, and warns the agent can still misjudge urgency or misread threads.
