Anthropic Ends Claude Subscription Coverage for OpenClaw and Other Third-Party Tools

The company cites agent workloads that overwhelm flat monthly plans.

Overview

  • Anthropic, which began enforcing the change Saturday at 12 p.m. PT, now requires pay-as-you-go billing via extra-usage bundles or API keys for OpenClaw and will extend this to other third-party harnesses.
  • Subscribers were offered a one-time credit equal to one month of their plan, access to discounted extra-usage bundles, and the option to request a full refund by email.
  • Anthropic said third-party agent frameworks generate heavy, continuous traffic that strains capacity and that subscriptions were not designed for these machine-paced workloads.
  • OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger said he and board member Dave Morin secured a one-week delay and he criticized the timing after Steinberger joined OpenAI.
  • Developers debated the move across X, Reddit, and Hacker News, and some are testing other models or vendors as providers rethink how to price agent-style usage.
