Anthropic Blocks Claude From Recreating Specific Video Games

The company says the change is meant to protect intellectual property but leaves detection rules and enforcement unclear.

Overview

  • Anthropic confirmed on Oct. 30 that it added two sentences to Claude Code on Opus 5.5 instructing the model not to recreate someone else’s specific game.
  • Claude will still generate original games, genre-based projects, and games built from a user’s own designs and assets according to Anthropic technical staff.
  • Developers and users have reported the update already blocking legitimate workflows such as reverse-engineering tasks and digital modules for board games.
  • The restriction is implemented as a server-side prompt change that Anthropic controls, but other commercial services and open-weight models currently allow game cloning and can be used to skirt the limit.
  • The move responds to a surge in AI-assisted game clones on storefronts and follows past IP disputes involving Anthropic, and it may push more developers to keep demos private to protect their work.
