Anthony Gilheaney Jailed for Life Over Christmas Day West End Murder

The sentence follows a jury finding that he used his car as a weapon in drink-fuelled attacks captured on CCTV.

Overview

  • Sentenced at the Old Bailey to life imprisonment with a 37-year minimum term, plus a lifetime driving ban.
  • Jurors in December convicted him of murdering Aidan Chapman, attempting to murder Dr Marcelo Basbus-Garcia and Tyrone Itorho, wounding Arif Khan with intent, and causing grievous bodily harm to Miguel Waihrich.
  • Prosecutors said victims were targeted with racist and homophobic abuse, and the judge said he holds deeply racist attitudes toward Asian members of the public.
  • Met detectives pieced together the rampage using extensive CCTV, dashcam footage and witness accounts, which showed deliberate pavement mounting and driving at pedestrians.
  • The attacks unfolded in London’s West End in the early hours of December 25, 2024; Chapman died on New Year’s Eve and Gilheaney was arrested about 20 minutes after the collisions in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
