Andhra Railway Police Fire on Suspects in Pre-Dawn Signal-Tampering Attempt

Authorities link the encounter to attempts to sabotage signals used to stop trains for robberies.

Overview

  • Government Railway Police on patrol in Guntur district opened fire early Tuesday after suspects near a signal pelted stones at them.
  • GRP DSP Akhleshwar Rao said officers fired 10 rounds, including six from 303 rifles and four from a sub-inspector’s pistol, as warning and self-defence shots.
  • The suspects fled into nearby fields in the dark, and police recovered a cutter, a tester, gloves, and other tools left at the site.
  • Six teams from the GRP and local police launched a manhunt, stepped up night patrols, and began checking CCTV along the Nidubrolu section.
  • Officials say gangs have tried to tamper with signals to halt trains and rob passengers, and field units now have clearance to use firearms after an April 19 robbery on the BengaluruNarsapuram route.
