Overview
- Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet, which met Thursday, approved a resolution to name Amaravati the sole capital and scheduled a special Assembly session on March 28 to pass it.
- The state plans to ask the Union government to amend Section 5 of the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act so the law explicitly names Amaravati as the capital.
- The Centre has advised matching changes to the state’s APCRDA law, and reports say the law ministry has cleared draft amendments for Parliament during the current session.
- The cabinet moved to carry out the 2022 High Court order, withdraw its Supreme Court appeals, and seek a Union Gazette notification and Survey of India map updates with recognition from June 2, 2024.
