Andhra Cabinet Backs Amaravati as Sole Capital, Sets March 28 Assembly Vote

The move aims to lock in Amaravati’s status through Central legislation after years of flux.

  • Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet, which met Thursday, approved a resolution to name Amaravati the sole capital and scheduled a special Assembly session on March 28 to pass it.

  • The Centre has advised matching changes to the state’s APCRDA law, and reports say the law ministry has cleared draft amendments for Parliament during the current session.
  • The cabinet moved to carry out the 2022 High Court order, withdraw its Supreme Court appeals, and seek a Union Gazette notification and Survey of India map updates with recognition from June 2, 2024.
  • Work on the capital is ramping up, with approvals for about ₹50,000 crore in projects and reported backing that includes ₹15,000 crore in Central aid, in-principle World Bank support, and an ₹11,000 crore HUDCO loan.
