Andean Bear Cub Seized From Puno Home Is Transferred to Madre de Dios Rehabilitation Center

Authorities use the case to reinforce Peru's ban on keeping wildlife.

Overview

  • The male cub, about three months old and weighing 3.88 kilograms, was assessed in good health and showed naturally shy behavior.
  • The animal was recovered from a house in Ayapata, Carabaya, after a resident alerted authorities to its presence.
  • Hydro Global Perú provided transport from the San Gabán control post to Mazuco, where the cub was handed to the Regional Forest Authority and the Taricaya Rescue Center for specialized care.
  • SERFOR reiterated that capturing, possessing or trading wild animals is illegal, stressing the Andean bear’s role as a key seed disperser for forest regeneration.
  • Officials advised people not to approach, feed or share exact locations of bears and noted that seasonal fires can draw bears toward populated areas, as seen in recent sightings in Ituata and Ollachea.
