Andalusia Breaks Ground on Málaga’s Virgen de la Esperanza Hospital With €1 Billion Plan

Officials detailed a roughly €1 billion package to address Málaga’s healthcare gaps, including a metro extension.

Overview

  • President Juanma Moreno laid the first stone and presented the complex as a benchmark for Andalusian and European public healthcare.
  • The hospital is planned with 815 single rooms, 48 operating theatres across three floors, 158 specialist consultation rooms, and dedicated teaching and research areas.
  • The campus will be organized into four towers spanning more than 400,000 square meters, according to the regional government’s presentation.
  • The government estimated nearly €600 million for the building works excluding equipment and earmarked €240 million to extend Metro Line 2 to the hospital.
  • Moreno framed it as the eighth hospital built under his tenure and highlighted 2026 outlays including opening the Costa del Sol expansion, €5 million to relocate the transfusion center, and €5 million for “prontoterapia” at the Materno Infantil hospital, alongside a pledge to plant 15,000 new trees and transplant key existing ones.
