Anaheim Man Charged After Attempted Kidnapping of Mother and Teen Near Bus Stop

Police say facial recognition applied to victim-captured video led to the 59-year-old’s arrest within two hours.

Overview

  • The attack occurred Tuesday around midday near Lincoln Avenue and East Street, where a man allegedly tried to drag the pair off the sidewalk while threatening sexual assault.
  • The mother and daughter fought back and recorded the suspect’s face, and a driver stopped to take them to safety; investigators are seeking that good Samaritan.
  • Using the victims’ image along with surveillance feeds, Anaheim’s Real Time Crime Center employed facial recognition to help locate the suspect nearby.
  • Jose Gudino, 59, was arrested within about two hours and has since been charged with multiple felonies, including kidnapping with intent to commit a sex offense, with an arraignment scheduled.
  • Police said Gudino is homeless and, according to the agency, has no known history of violent attacks, as the victims continue to recover.
