Amit Shah Orders Nationwide Flood Teams, Expanded Lake Early-Warning in Zero-Casualty Push

The directives start a pre-monsoon drive to turn disaster guidelines into action on the ground.

Overview

  • The home minister, who led a high-level review Sunday, issued orders to speed monsoon readiness under a zero-casualty goal.
  • Authorities will expand early-warning coverage to at least 60 glacial and mountain lakes, including 30 high-risk sites across J&K, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, with NDMA support.
  • States must constitute and activate Flood Crisis Management Teams to tighten local response during floods.
  • A unified flood forecasting system will link central and state agencies so alerts reach people faster.
  • NDMA will study how well states follow MHA and NDMA rules on floods, heatwaves and forest fires, and Shah urged check dams and groundwater recharge using CAMPA funds to strengthen resilience.
