American-Chilean Influencer Ben Wood Among Four Dead in Chile Surf Rescue Attempt

Police have opened an inquiry focused on drownings in hazardous surf.

Overview

  • The March 9 incident in Algarrobo began when a large wave swept 26-year-old Patricia del Pilar Bello Labe into the ocean.
  • Her partner, Felipe Hernández Bustos, Ben Wood, Wood’s partner María José Duarte Ureta, and Wood’s father Norman Ray Wood entered the water to help and were overwhelmed by waves.
  • Only Hernández Bustos survived after a Chilean Navy helicopter pulled him from the water, and the Navy later recovered the bodies.
  • The Chilean Forensic Medical Service reported that Duarte Ureta was rescued alive but died later at a hospital, and authorities say the victims died from drowning.
  • Wood, 43, a Connecticut-born food and craft-beer creator with more than 37,000 Instagram followers, was publicly mourned by his daughter in an Instagram tribute.
