American Airlines Reintroduces 4K Seatback Screens and Expands Premium Seats

The overhaul is meant to attract higher‑paying travelers to help close a profit gap with Delta and United.

Overview

  • American announced on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026 that new narrowbody deliveries will include seatback entertainment beginning in 2028 and that retrofits across its existing narrowbody fleet will start in 2028 and run into the early 2030s.
  • The new system will offer 4K displays with Bluetooth audio pairing and USB‑C fast charging at every seat plus larger screens and tailored content for premium cabins.
  • The carrier expects more than 800 mainline narrowbody aircraft to receive screens while excluding regional American Eagle planes and plans to equip 500-plus narrowbodies with SpaceX Starlink starting in 2027 to support connected services.
  • American will boost premium capacity on single‑aisle jets from roughly 25% today to about 40% by adding first‑class rows and more Main Cabin Extra seats as part of a push to raise revenue per flight.
  • Management frames the move as a reversal of its 2017 decision to remove monitors, a response to competitors’ investments and a tactic to narrow a persistent profitability gap, but the airline has not disclosed total program costs and passengers will see an uneven product for several years during the retrofit rollout.
