Ambush on Ukhrul Goods Convoy Kills Driver and Halts Key Highways

A goods convoy that was attacked on Friday, May 29, while under a joint BSF, CRPF and Manipur Police escort was fired on in Ukhrul, killing truck driver Nitish Kumar and wounding constable Disingam Maringmei.
Drivers suspended services on National Highway-37, leaving roughly 400 vehicles including LPG and oil tankers parked at Keithelmanbi as they demand stronger security and reopening of highways.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the ambush, met transport union leaders and the victim’s family, and said an FIR has been registered with investigations and security operations ongoing.
Responsibility for the attack remains contested with some reports blaming suspected Kuki militants and local shutdown actions while Naga organisations have denied involvement, and authorities have not publicly confirmed a perpetrator.
The convoy was carrying mainly Food Corporation of India rice and the strike threatens food and fuel supplies to the hill districts, deepening a three-year cycle of ethnic tensions and movement restrictions that have already displaced communities.
