Ambulance Strike Begins Across Ireland as HSE Warns of Major Disruption

The stoppage stems from a 2020 review on pay and roles that unions say remains unfulfilled.

Overview

  • Following Monday's work-to-rule, a 24-hour strike began at 8am Tuesday involving about 2,000 National Ambulance Service staff with pickets at bases nationwide.
  • The HSE says 999/112 remains fully operational with life‑threatening cases prioritized, and the NAS clinical director advised some patients may reach hospital faster by making their own way.
  • SIPTU and Unite say the HSE has not implemented a 2020 Roles and Responsibilities Review that recommended higher pay to reflect expanded qualifications and duties.
  • The HSE says it accepted WRC-brokered proposals and a Labour Court timeline offering 3%–14% pay rises on top of a 9.25% public sector deal, which union members rejected in September 2025.
  • Further stoppages are scheduled, with a 48-hour strike on May 19 and a 72-hour strike on May 26, and unions plan more action in June if no deal is reached.
