Amboss Activates RailsX for Self-Custody Stablecoin Trading on Lightning

The launch tests if routed, self-custody swaps can move dollar liquidity onto Bitcoin’s payment network.

Overview

  • Amboss activated RailsX on Tuesday, opening peer-to-peer swaps between bitcoin and Speed Wallet’s USDT-L and USDC-L with atomic settlement in seconds over existing Lightning channels.
  • Trades do not use a centralized order book, and prices form through routed channel liquidity as nodes forward payments along available paths.
  • Thunderhub integration lets Lightning node operators execute swaps from their own infrastructure while keeping control of their private keys.
  • USDT-L and USDC-L are issued by Speed Wallet, which says both are fully reserved, creating a model with centralized issuance and decentralized, self-custody settlement.
  • RailsX extends Amboss’s Rails liquidity product so nodes can provision channel capital and trade against it on-network, with early activity now set to show whether liquidity depth and participation can support consistent pricing and real volume.
