Amber Rain Warnings for Cumbria and Southwest Scotland as Forecasters Warn of Life-Threatening Flooding

Emergency plans are active due to saturated ground increasing risk from a slow-moving rain band.

Overview

  • Met Office amber alerts run from Sunday 06:00 to Monday 18:00 for Cumbria and for Sunday in Dumfries & Galloway, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde, with wider yellow warnings across northwest England, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of Scotland.
  • Cumbria could see more than 200mm of rain over 48 hours, while parts of the Southern Uplands may reach 110–130mm with 50–70mm more widely and gusts up to 60–70mph on west Scottish coasts.
  • The Environment Agency says significant river and surface-water flooding impacts are probable in Cumbria on Sunday and Monday, with teams deployed and public flood-risk maps and alerts in place.
  • Northern has told passengers not to travel in Cumbria on Sunday and Monday, cancelling services on seven routes with no replacement transport, and other operators warn of delays and cancellations.
  • Officials urge people to prepare flood kits, avoid driving through floodwater, plan only essential journeys and monitor updated warnings as conditions and impacts may change.
