Overview

  • A district appellate bench on June 9 set aside a 2009 decree and found that the 1945 agreement was in the nature of a government grant and that the owner had breached its terms by running a public hotel.
  • The Land and Development Office issued a Rs.940 crore demand on April 30 following a Supreme Court finding on April 22 that characterised the land as a government grant.
  • On June 11 the L&DO served an eviction notice under the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1971, declaring the company an unauthorised occupant and directing recovery of possession from sub‑tenants.
  • Sir Sobha Singh and Sons moved the Delhi High Court on June 17 to challenge the June 9 judgment and the June 11 eviction notice, arguing procedural unfairness and disputing the L&DO’s jurisdiction.
  • Justice Tejas Karia admitted the appeal, recorded the Centre’s statement that PP Act proceedings will not be influenced by the Tis Hazari judgment, declined to grant an interim stay and listed the substantive hearing for July 23 while the Estate Officer hearing continues on July 3.
